One day, no car, and a city that insists on being spread across three waterfronts. The good news is that the best of Vancouver sits in a surprisingly tidy loop. This route runs from Gastown through Coal Harbour and Stanley Park, over to English Bay, across False Creek by ferry to Granville Island, along to the Vanier Park museums and finishes with dinner on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. It is about 18 km including the 9 km bike loop, every stop is inside the City of Vancouver, and the walking legs are measured, not guessed. We left the North Shore out on purpose. You can have it next time.
Morning: coffee and the steam clock in Gastown (8:00 to 9:15)
Start in Gastown with coffee at The Birds and the Beets on Powell Street, which opens at 8:00 daily by our last check. It is a 7 minute walk from there to the Gastown Steam Clock at Water and Cambie.
Yes, it is a clock that steams, and yes, people stop to photograph it. Join in. It is free, and it sets the tone for a day of looking at things on purpose.
Canada Place and the Coal Harbour seawall (9:15 to 10:15)
From the steam clock, it is a 13 minute walk to the Olympic Cauldron by Canada Place. Then follow the Coal Harbour seawall for about 25 minutes to the edge of Stanley Park. The views of the water, the mountains and the floatplanes come free with the walk.
If you have more money than patience, the seaplane panorama over Vancouver is $149. If the day is wet, FlyOver at Canada Place opens at 10:00 and keeps you indoors. Check its current hours before you commit.
Stanley Park by bike: the 9 km seawall loop (10:15 to 12:15)
Rent bikes near Denman and Georgia, just outside the park. The seawall loop is about 9 km and takes one to two hours by bike, or two to three on foot. Cyclists must ride counter-clockwise. Walkers can go either way, which is why they smugly get to change their minds.
Rental prices vary by shop and by season, so check before you go. The bike is a fair-weather plan, best from spring to fall. If you are on foot, swap the full loop for Lost Lagoon and Beaver Lake, or add the Prospect Point view for a free lookout.
English Bay: statues, gelato and the walk to the ferry (12:15 to 13:00)
From the rental shops, it is a 12 minute walk to English Bay Beach. Say hello to the A-maze-ing Laughter statues, grab a gelato if the mood strikes, and stretch your legs.
Then it is another 13 minutes to the Sunset Beach ferry dock at the foot of Thurlow Street. Sunset at English Bay is a lovely free show, but at midday just take the walk and save the golden hour for later.
Ferry to Granville Island for a market lunch (13:00 to 15:00)
Hop on a False Creek ferry from the Sunset Beach dock. The crossing takes a few minutes, which is barely enough time to work out where to point the camera. The Public Market is open 9 AM to 6 PM, with free entry and lunch up to you.
A trap worth knowing: the ferry operators and Granville Island publish different evening finish times, so check the operator before planning a late crossing. Also, the market closes on Mondays in January only for maintenance, so check ahead if you are visiting then.
Vanier Park museums in the afternoon (15:00 to 17:00)
From the market, it is a 25 minute waterfront walk to Vanier Park, or you can take the ferry to the Maritime Museum dock. Pick one or two museums rather than all of them. Museum fatigue is real.
Here is the opening-day trap: the Vancouver Maritime Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last sale 30 minutes before close, so it is closed Mondays. The Museum of Vancouver is open daily, until 8 pm Thursday to Saturday. The Space Centre planetarium has hourly weekend shows, so check the schedule before you go.
Sunset at Kitsilano Beach
From the museums, it is a 13 minute walk to Kitsilano Beach at the Arbutus Street end. Check the sunset time before you plan the day, because it moves a lot through the year.
In winter the sun sets before the Maritime Museum closes. Swap the order and do the museums first, then the beach. From spring to fall, the beach as the day's finale is hard to beat.
Dinner on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano (from 18:30)
It is an 11 minute walk from the beach to Maenam, and just 117 metres from there to Fable Kitchen. Pick whichever has a table. Check opening hours first, since Maenam opens later in the day on some weekdays.
Maenam's Thai dinner is $34 to $70 per person. Fable Kitchen's farm-to-table is $36 to $52. Delara is $45 to $69, and Las Margaritas is $21 to $24 for tacos and margaritas, the budget option.
Getting back downtown, and a nightcap
TransLink buses 4, 7 and 14 run eastbound from West 4th Avenue at Maple Street to Granville and West Georgia in 10 to 18 scheduled minutes. In the evening, it is about 13.
Then a downtown nightcap, if you have the energy. Prophecy's award-winning drinks run $8 to $56, UVA's wine and cocktails are $26 to $43 and the piano lounge at Bacchus is $43 to $69.
If it rains: the same route, indoors
Keep the same geography and change the activities. FlyOver at Canada Place in the morning, Lost Lagoon on foot instead of the bike loop, then the market and the Vanier Park museums, which are all indoors.
Rain makes Vancouver quieter and the museums warmer. Bring a real umbrella, not the lobby-sale one, and the day still works.
Vancouver in one day: three waterfronts, one ferry and a dinner you earned by pedalling.

Can you see Vancouver in one day without a car?
Yes, if you stay in the city core. This route uses walking legs of 7 to 25 minutes, a False Creek ferry to Granville Island and TransLink buses 4, 7 or 14 from West 4th Avenue back downtown, which are scheduled at 10 to 18 minutes to Granville and Georgia.
How long does it take to bike around Stanley Park?
The Stanley Park seawall loop is about 9 km and takes one to two hours by bike or two to three hours on foot. Cyclists must ride counter-clockwise, and rental shops are near Denman and Georgia Streets just outside the park.
How do you get from downtown Vancouver to Granville Island?
Take a small ferry across False Creek. False Creek Ferries picks up at Sunset Beach (foot of Thurlow Street), David Lam Park, Yaletown and the Plaza of Nations, and most trips take a few minutes. The Aquabus runs from Hornby Street. TransLink bus 50 also stops at Anderson Street and West 2nd Avenue.
What time does Granville Island Public Market open?
The Public Market is open 9 AM to 6 PM. It is open on statutory holidays except December 25, December 26 and January 1, and it closes on Mondays in January only for maintenance.
Which Vancouver museums are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays?
The Vancouver Maritime Museum lists hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC is closed Mondays from October 15 to May 15. The Vancouver Art Gallery is closed on Tuesdays. The Museum of Vancouver is open every day, until 8pm Thursday to Saturday.
What time do the Granville Island ferries stop running?
False Creek Ferries states it runs year-round from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. Granville Island's own directions page gives 10:30 pm in summer and 8:30 pm in winter, and the Aquabus says 7:00am to 10:00pm. Because the sources differ, check the operator before planning a late crossing.
