Vancouver's best kite-flying lawn sits between Kits Beach and Granville Island, with a postcard skyline view and zero admission.
Vanier Park is the breezy green wedge between Kits Beach and Granville Island, and its wide-open lawns plus the reliable English Bay wind have made it Vancouver's undisputed kite-flying spot. The seawall path here serves up a clean postcard view of the downtown skyline and Stanley Park across the water, with the Museum of Vancouver's crab fountain anchoring one end. The date has a very low floor and a surprisingly high ceiling: bring a cheap kite, fly it badly, laugh about it, walk the seawall, and then somehow find yourselves deep in the kind of conversation you forgot you could have. It is completely free, entirely daytime, and the sort of low-stakes outing that turns out to be the one you talk about six months later.
