Broke & Bougie
One of the world's only steam clocks, cobblestones, gas lamps, and Vancouver's full origin story for the cost of absolutely nothing.
Everything here is already doing the work. Arrive at the top or quarter of the hour and the Gastown Steam Clock, one of only a handful in the world, hisses and toots on cue. It runs 24 hours a day and costs nothing to stand in front of. From there: cobblestones, gas-lamp glow, brick warehouses turned boutiques, bronze plaques in the sidewalks full of stories about saloons and great fires, and the impossibly narrow flatiron Hotel Europe looking like it's auditioning for a postcard. In summer a free heritage walking tour leaves daily at 2pm from the Gassy Jack spot if you want someone to narrate the whole thing. Or just wander, photograph everything, and let the oldest corner of the city convince you it planned the date itself.
