Cozy & Intimate
Off the Moda Hotel lobby on Seymour: low-lit, Italian small plates, marble bar, and a daily 2-to-5 happy hour worth knowing about.
Uva has been doing the downtown date-bar thing quietly and correctly for years, tucked off the lobby of the heritage Moda Hotel on Seymour Street with no visible effort and all the right results. It's snug and low-lit, the seasonal cocktail program is genuinely considered, the wine list ranges widely, and the Italian small plates are built for sharing with someone you'd like to keep talking to. The room rarely tips into scene territory, which is either a testament to good taste or proof that the regulars are keeping it to themselves. Hit the daily 2-to-5 happy hour if you can, or show up late and grab two spots at the marble bar and ask the bartender what they'd drink. It's central, unfussy, and somehow still manages to feel romantic. This is harder to pull off than it looks.
