Things to do in Coal Harbour, Vancouver

Coal Harbour is named after the low-grade coal found here in 1859, and in the 167 years since, it's found much better things to be known for. There's an Art Deco skyscraper, the 2010 Olympic cauldron, floatplanes landing on the harbour and a $195 tasting menu, and a free seawall strings all of it together on the way to Stanley Park.

Coal Harbour history: the coal, the Marine Building and the cauldron

Low-grade coal found in the harbour in 1859 gave the area its name. The next big landmark was the Art Deco Marine Building, completed by the 1930s and once the tallest building in the city. If your neighbourhood is named after second-rate coal, building something that makes everybody look up is a pretty good response.

Then came the 2010 Olympic cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza, which is worth seeing in person if you've only seen it in photos. Beside it, Douglas Coupland's Digital Orca leaps out of the pavement in pixelated, LEGO-look blocks.

Coal Harbour restaurants with a view

At Miku, by Canada Place, the aburi sushi is seared with a flame, and the salmon oshi is pressed, torched and draped in a faintly sweet sauce, with Burrard Inlet in the windows. Aburi oshi runs $19 to $22 and nigiri selections $32 to $35, which makes Miku the easy way in to a list where the next restaurant up starts at a $125 table d'hôte. It opens at 11:30am on weekdays and noon on weekends, and closes at 10pm.

At Five Sails, above Canada Place, the reason to go is the view, through floor-to-ceiling windows that take in Coal Harbour, Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains in one sweep. It's a special-occasion bill: three courses are $125 a person, and the tasting menu is $195, or $290 with the BC beverage pairing. Canadian Culinary Champion Alex Kim leads the kitchen, and the doors open at 5pm nightly. Big anniversary coming up? This is the one we'd book.

Botanist, the Fairmont Pacific Rim's flagship, is Chef Hector Laguna's seasonal West Coast room, with a cocktail program ranked among the world's best and a marble bar to order it at. The tasting menu, ordered by the whole table, is $178 a person plus $89 for the standard wine pairing, and it's called We'll Take It From Here, which is honestly what you want to hear after a week of making every decision yourself. Its posted hours end at 1:30pm on Mondays and 2pm on Sundays, so plan the tasting menu for Tuesday to Saturday.

Seaplane tours and dinner cruises from Coal Harbour

Want to see it all from above? Harbour Air's Vancouver Classic Panorama lifts off beside the Olympic cauldron, climbs over Lions Gate Bridge and Stanley Park and settles back onto the water. Every row on the de Havilland floatplane gets a window, and fares start at $149 for adults and $120 for children.

Prefer to stay on the water? The MV Harbour Princess summer dinner cruise leaves the north foot of Denman Street at 7pm with a West Coast buffet, live music and an open-air rooftop deck, and with midsummer sunset landing near 9, you get to watch the sky change while someone else steers, cooks and plays. The 2026 season ran May 21 to September 13, with adult tickets at $169 before taxes, fees and an 18% gratuity, so watch the operator's site for next summer's dates.

Coal Harbour on a rainy day

FlyOver at Canada Place, open 10am to 8pm daily at $29 to $40, hangs your feet over a 20-metre dome screen and flies you from the Rockies to the aurora in about eight minutes, with wind, mist and the smell of pine timed to the turns. It's the only weather in Coal Harbour guaranteed to arrive on cue.

For something slower, head to the Fairmont Pacific Rim's fifth floor, where Willow Stream Spa runs a mineral bath, a jacuzzi, a eucalyptus steam room and a Himalayan salt sauna. Non-hotel guests pay $109 for 90 minutes of facility access, Monday to Thursday, and the spa is open 8am to 10pm. On a wet day, that's our idea of a plan.

Walk the Coal Harbour seawall for free

Roughly 2km of flat, free waterfront runs from Jack Poole Plaza toward Stanley Park, past the cauldron, the orca and floatplanes skimming down onto the harbour. It's much the same view you get from Five Sails, for free. Destination Vancouver says visitors and locals both gravitate to this seawall, walking or biking it for the harbour and mountain views.

Here's our honest take. After the skyscraper, the Olympic flame, the floatplanes and the $195 tasting menu, the best thing in Coal Harbour is still the harbour, and it costs nothing at any hour.

Things to do in Coal Harbour with kids

With kids, the seawall is the plan: flat, free and lined with things worth pointing at, from the Olympic cauldron to real floatplanes landing on the water to a pixelated whale. If watching the floatplanes stops being enough, Harbour Air lists child fares from $120, and FlyOver at Canada Place runs daily, so check its own rules for younger flyers.

Honestly, none of our Coal Harbour restaurants or the spa is tagged as a family pick, so make the seawall the family day and save We'll Take It From Here for an evening when a babysitter is the one taking it from here.

Vancouver Christmas Market at Jack Poole Plaza

From November 16 to December 24, 2026, the Vancouver Christmas Market fills Jack Poole Plaza, right at the start of the seawall. Check the market's own site for tickets and hours before you go, and if it were us, we'd pair it with a walk along the water while you're down there.

Plan your visit

Our tip: come by SkyTrain. The nearest stations are Waterfront and Burrard, Waterfront links to Canada Place through Waterfront Centre, and Destination Vancouver notes that daily excursions here don't require a car. Harbour Air's terminal is in the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre at Unit 1 Burrard Landing, 1055 Canada Place, steps from Jack Poole Plaza. The summer dinner cruise boards at 501 Denman Street, at the north foot of Denman.

Our take is to do it as one free walk with a few expensive detours. Start at Jack Poole Plaza with the cauldron and the Digital Orca, follow the seawall toward Stanley Park, and spend money only where you want to sit down: a $19 aburi plate at Miku, a $109 soak at Willow Stream or a $178 tasting menu at Botanist. What about shopping? We found no official guide naming a shopping street here, so for shops, head to Robson Street nearby.
