December in Vancouver gives you about eight hours of daylight and a lot of lights to make up for it. That is good news for dating, because a light walk, a market or a concert hands you a plan with a built-in ending: dinner somewhere warm. This guide pairs the 2026 holiday events with a place to eat or drink nearby, so the evening holds together instead of ending in a parking lot. Dates and prices come from each organiser's own 2026 page as of late October. Where a price or time was not posted yet, we say so rather than guess.
How to plan a Christmas date in Vancouver without the queue
Most of the big holiday events now sell timed entry, and the good slots go first on Friday and Saturday nights. Book the event before you book dinner, then pick a table that fits the time you landed. Weeknights in late November and early December are calmer and often cheaper.
Plan for rain. Nearly everything on this list is outdoors, so warm shoes and a hood matter more than the outfit. Pick a dinner spot close to the event so you are not walking in the wet for long, and keep the night to two stops. A light walk plus dinner is a full date. Adding a market, a show and a nightcap is a logistics exercise.
Christmas light walks for couples
VanDusen Festival of Lights runs November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027, 4 to 10 pm with last entry at 9 pm, closed December 25. The City lists adult tickets at $29 before GST and service fees, sold online only for a set entry time through Showpass, with sales opening November 4. It is the easiest light walk to pair with dinner in the city: Vij's on Cambie and a nightcap at Lala are both a short drive away.
Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park runs November 20, 2026 to January 10, 2027, 11 am to 9 pm, and you can stay an hour after closing. It is closed December 25. Entry is in one-hour arrival windows booked online. BC residents can get a free annual pass with proof of residency, but passholders still have to reserve a time online. The park runs a free shuttle from downtown on peak nights, which saves you the parking hunt.
Burnaby Village Museum's Festive Village is the free option: November 25, 2026 to January 3, 2027, 2 to 9 pm, Wednesday to Sunday until December 13, then daily from December 16. It is closed December 24 and 25. The vintage carousel is a small extra charge. For the full list with maps and prices, see our Christmas lights page.
A Christmas market date, then dinner
The Vancouver Christmas Market is at Jack Poole Plaza from November 16 to December 24, 2026. From November 16 to December 4 it opens 4 to 9:30 pm on weekdays and 11:30 am to 9:30 pm on weekends, with longer hours in December. Single entry starts at $7.99 if you buy before November 15, and those tickets carry a 30-minute arrival window. A season pass skips the time slot entirely, which is worth knowing if you plan to go twice.
The market sits beside Canada Place, so dinner is easy. Gastown is a ten-minute walk east, where Is That French on Blood Alley does wine and small plates, and Entrecote does steak frites. If it is a big night, Five Sails at Canada Place is right there.
The Shipyards Christmas Market in North Vancouver is free to enter and runs November 27 to December 24, 2026, 11 am to 9 pm Sunday to Thursday and to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday. It has more than 90 wooden chalets and an ice rink. Jagerhof's alpine supper on Lonsdale is the obvious match, and Palki does candlelit North Indian a block away. New this year, the Langley Christmas Village opens November 26 in downtown Langley City from the same team. Our Christmas markets page has the rest.
A dressed-up night: Messiah, the Nutcracker or Elf
If you want one night in December that feels like an occasion, book a show. The Vancouver Bach Choir sings Handel's Messiah at the Orpheum on Saturday, December 12, 2026 at 7:30 pm, with tickets from $20 to $65 on Showpass. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Nutcracker plays the Queen Elizabeth Theatre December 9 to 13, presented by Ballet BC. The Arts Club's Elf: The Musical runs November 12 to December 27 at the Stanley on Granville Street, from $39.
For the Orpheum, have a drink first at the Bacchus piano lounge in the Wedgewood Hotel, a short walk away, or stay out after the encore for late jazz at Frankie's. Book the drink for a time that leaves you twenty minutes to find your seats.
Christmas dates outside the city
The Noël Holiday Light Festival with Bright Nights is at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds from November 27 to December 29, 2026, 3 to 9:30 pm. It is closed November 30, December 7, 24 and 25. Adults pay from $24 plus tax and fees, with timed entry. Bright Nights is the firefighters' light walk that used to run in Stanley Park. Tableside flambé at the Old Surrey Restaurant in Cloverdale makes it a proper night out.
Glow Gardens in Langley runs November 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027 and is closed Sundays. Adult tickets are $19.99 plus fees. Annora in Willowbrook is a good tasting menu close by. Steveston's Winter in the Village runs November 19 to December 31 and is free to wander, with holiday displays along the waterfront and festive drinks and desserts priced by each shop. Finish with fish at Steveston Seafood House.
Free and cheap Christmas date ideas
A December date does not need a ticket. Festive Village in Burnaby, the Shipyards market and Steveston's village lights are all free to enter. Lights at Lafarge in Coquitlam kicks off with an opening event on Friday, November 27, 5 to 8 pm, and the City calls it Metro Vancouver's largest free outdoor winter lights display. The rest of its 2026 hours were not posted when we checked.
Skating is the other cheap classic. The Shipyards rink is free if you bring your own skates, and our ice skating date guide covers the rest. Bring your own skates, add two hot drinks, and the night costs less than most dinners.
