Mount Pleasant, Vancouver's first suburb, is full of places that used to be something else. Heritage Hall went from post office and RCMP meeting space to hosting a makers market, a ghost kitchen grew into a room with leather booths, and rock dug up during the Olympics became a wildlife refuge that locals nicknamed Beer Island. Here's where to eat, drink, wander and bring the kids between False Creek and 16th Avenue.

Where to eat in Mount Pleasant

Blaze started in 2019 as a ghost kitchen and worked its way up to a real room of exposed brick, leather booths and an open kitchen behind glass, and now you can book it on OpenTable. Everything is halal, the kitchen is nut free and there's no liquor licence, so the beer is a five minute walk away at Brassneck or Main Street Brewing. Sing Sing on Main pours local craft taps until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays and settles the pizza or pho question by serving both. Any couple who has stood on a sidewalk saying "I don't mind, you pick" will appreciate that.

At Fassil on East Broadway, six or eight tables under walls of Ethiopian art share one round of injera piled with slow-cooked stews. Then there's the tradition of gursha, hand-feeding your companion a bite, which we think is a lovely way to share a meal on a date.

For a big occasion, Andrea Carlson earned a Michelin star at Burdock & Co, a small, candle-lit room at 2702 Main where the Moon tasting menus (around $175) follow whatever BC is producing that week. Kavita on West 3rd is named for chef Tushar Tondvalkar's mother and for the Marathi word for poetry, and its $145 Ammakase tasting brings regional Indian courses built on Fraser Valley ingredients, such as lamb with smoked honey. Savio Volpe, on Kingsway at the neighbourhood's borderline, turns spit-roasted meats over the fire beside seasonal handmade pasta. Further south on Main, past 16th Avenue, are Anh and Chi, Suyo and the Michelin-starred Published on Main.

Mount Pleasant breweries and Brewery Creek

The creek along today's Main Street was renamed Brewery Creek for the breweries its fresh water attracted, an era Destination Vancouver dates from 1888 to 1912, and the name stuck long after the brewers moved on. R&B Brewing was the first to set up in Brewery Creek again, in 1997. Today the tasting rooms line the side streets from East 2nd to East 8th Avenue. Destination Vancouver's top picks are Main Street Brewing at 261 East 7th, R&B and 33 Acres, plus Brassneck on Main itself, and the breweries will fill a growler if you want to take some home.

Here's a twist: in a district named for beer, one of the best stories is about wine. La Fabrique St-George on East 7th ferments natural BC wine in buried Georgian clay qvevri, which it says is the largest collection outside Georgia. Pair a glass with a build-your-own cheese and charcuterie plate and, on Saturdays, a jazz player at no cover.

Mount Pleasant bars and nights out

Mount Pleasant's bars like to keep a low profile. The Narrow Lounge at 1898 Main has no sign, just one red light beside an unmarked door behind a furniture shop. Follow it down a graffiti-covered stairwell into a long, skinny room that has poured cocktails and natural wine since 2008. Key Party at 2305 Main sits behind what looks like an accounting office, probably the only accounting office people happily walk into on a Friday night. Behind it is a shag-carpeted 1970s lounge of wood panelling, low couches and twists on 60s and 70s classics. It takes no reservations and stays open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mount Pleasant Vintage and Provisions on West 6th is an early-1900s heritage house, an airy warehouse and a patio all at once, and every part of it serves oysters from a wood-fired kitchen and cocktails until midnight every night. And a few nights a season, Science World, just north of the neighbourhood, swaps its school groups for a 19-plus crowd at After Dark, with cocktails, live demos and every exhibit yours to play with.

Coffee and dessert in Mount Pleasant

Nemesis's Great Northern Way flagship is a flower-shaped timber pavilion by Perkins&Will, warm birch plywood curving up to a central oculus that pours daylight onto the espresso and the Dope Bakehouse pastries, with Emily Carr's galleries next door. Modus on West Broadway roasts hyper-seasonal single origins right there in the blush-pink and green room you drink them in, so you can check the "freshly roasted" claim by turning around. Just note it's closed on Mondays.

For dessert, Earnest Ice Cream on Quebec Street, which started in 2012 as a bicycle operation, now sells small-batch whiskey hazelnut and London fog in glass jars you return for a deposit. The newest stop is Emeri, open at 2833 Main since July 2026 for specialty matcha and soft serve. It's a 20 or 30 minute stop, so we'd pair it with something else nearby.

Shopping on Main Street in Mount Pleasant

Shopping on Main is a mix of vintage and independent. 8th & Main and Mintage sell retro clothing and antiques, Bird on a Wire Creations and Much and Little stock independent gifts, the roasters sell their beans and the breweries refill growlers. Further south on Main at 3573, 4Cats runs a $38 Try the Wheel pottery workshop, where you try to turn a lump of clay into a mug and take it home whatever it becomes. Honestly, the lopsided ones make the better story.

Things to do in Mount Pleasant with kids

Science World is the rare museum where nobody has to say "don't touch that". Its hands-on exhibits and live science shows sit just north of the neighbourhood at 1455 Quebec Street, open 10am to 5pm daily. Allow about two hours. Adult admission is $37.50, ages 3 to 12 are $25.50, under 3 is free, and same-day tickets are sold only in person.

On Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 2 to 6pm, the business association lists Halloween trick-or-treating in Mount Pleasant and on Main Street. In summer, Dude Chilling Park hosts a Sunday farmers market.

Free things to do in Mount Pleasant

Let's clear this up first: Beer Island doesn't sell beer. Its real name is Habitat Island, a one-acre tidal wildlife refuge off the False Creek seawall at Hinge Park, built from rock excavated during the Olympics and reached at high tide by stepping stones. It's free to visit, and you get a skyline view.

Back along Main Street, more than 300 large-scale murals from the Vancouver Mural Festival years have turned the alleys and side streets into an open-air gallery, and the free VMF app maps them with routes and artist stories. Heritage Hall at 3102 Main, the former post office, is worth a look on the way. Further south on Main, the Pleasant Day Festival closed the street from 16th to King Edward on Saturday, August 8, 2026, for free stages, local vendors and food trucks.

Finish back at Olympic Village square with Myfanwy MacLeod's The Birds: two house sparrows, five metres tall each, a sly nod to Hitchcock and to small introduced species quietly taking over. It's an easy, free place to end the walk.

Plan your visit

Officially, the neighbourhood runs from False Creek and Great Northern Way south to 16th Avenue, and from Cambie Street east to Clark Drive. Main Street is its spine, and it keeps going long after Mount Pleasant stops, as a shopping and restaurant strip Destination Vancouver follows all the way to 33rd Avenue. Where a restaurant sits past the boundary, we've flagged it as further south on Main.

Our suggestion: pace it the way the neighbourhood was built, water first, beer second. Breweries settled here between 1888 and 1912 for the fresh water of a creek along today's Main Street. So start at the northern edge on the southeast False Creek seawall, home to Habitat Island, the giant sparrows of Olympic Village and, just up Quebec Street, Earnest Ice Cream. Then work up toward Broadway for coffee, give the late afternoon to the tasting rooms on the side streets between East 2nd and East 8th, and save Main after dark for dinner and the bars that make you look for them.
