More infoQueen's Park has been New Westminster's big green room since 1887, and the rose garden at its heart is the part worth planning around: formal beds, an arbour to stand under, a gazebo that wedding parties queue for, and benches placed to face the whole thing. Around it sit a centennial grove of mature trees, gravel paths through the arboretum, an outdoor amphitheatre and a decent chance of a brass band on a warm weekend. Seventy five acres, free, open all hours, and at its absolute peak from June into September.
Come in off First Street and head for the rose garden in the middle of the park: formal beds, a wooden arbour and a gazebo, at their best from June through September and better again in the last hour of light. Give it forty minutes, then loop out through the arboretum and the centennial grove, which is where the crowds are not. There is a concession by the playground, an outdoor amphitheatre that sometimes has a band on it, and the whole thing costs nothing. Bring something to sit on if you want the bench under the arbour, because it is the most contested seat in New Westminster.
