Sunset Over Spanish Banks

Scenic & Romantic

Sunset Over Spanish Banks

The one Vancouver sunset where the sand goes on forever, the crowds go home, and the sky takes its sweet time.

Spanish Banks is what you pick when you want space. At low tide the sand stretches on so long you start to think you could walk to the North Shore, the crowds thin out beautifully, and the downtown skyline shimmers across English Bay at a respectful distance. It faces northwest, so the sunsets here are not events. They are slow, drawn-out spectacles that go on long enough to have an actual conversation. Bring takeout dinner, check the tide chart so you hit the mirror-flat wet sand at its best, and stake out a log at the west end where it is quietest. There are picnic tables if you want a table, and the whole evening is free, which might be the most romantic thing about it. The sun sets. The sky turns ridiculous. You do absolutely nothing and it all works.
