It sits between Jericho and Spanish Banks, grassy picnic tables behind a wide strip of sand, the North Shore mountains across the water, and a west-facing shore that goes molten at sunset. Bring a blanket and the person you actually want to hear.
Provision on the way in: West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano is your supply line, Stong's or the bakeries and delis along 4th will load you up with sandwiches, fruit and something to clink. At Locarno, aim for the grassy picnic-table area backing the sand (tables and fire pits are first-come, so earlier is better on summer weekends), it's flatter and gives you a backrest of grass with the beach right in front. Check the tide before you go: at low tide the water retreats and leaves a warm sandflat you can stroll way out on together, which is the whole move here. Because it's a designated quiet beach, it stays genuinely peaceful, lean into that. Don't miss staying for the west-facing view over the bay with the North Shore mountains lit behind it.
