Carmelo's does one service a day and does it properly: doors at five, white linen, a wood-fired oven at the back, and the kind of Italian menu that has not needed reinventing in years. It is small and it takes the reservation seriously: a table is held ninety minutes on a small booking and two hours on a larger one, with a fifteen-minute grace period spelled out on their own site. Diners have pushed it to number two of the hundred-odd restaurants in West Vancouver, which for a room this quiet on Marine Drive is telling. Ambleside Beach is four blocks down the hill.
