More infoBevel opened in mid-August at 1165 Mainland Street, in the old MeeT space, from Text Me When You Land Hospitality, the group behind Dovetail a few doors down. It's a 140-seat room built around a central bar, with a dining room and an all-season patio, and executive chef Ejner Christiansen runs a family-style menu: there are no plated entrees, so everything lands in the middle of the table. The pizza is the reason the place exists. The dough ferments for 72 hours, and the menu runs from a $27 cheese pie to a $33 spicy pepperoni with stracciatella and jalapeño. Around it sit steak tartare ($26), tomato carpaccio ($22), three steaks (a 10 oz flat iron at $49 up to a 20 oz ribeye at $110), and a martini list where a classic is $19. We'd split a pizza and one small plate, order two martinis, and sit at the bar if you can. It's a lively room rather than a hushed one, which takes the pressure off a first date and keeps a long-standing one fun.
Bevel is at 1165 Mainland Street, a few doors from Dovetail. Book on OpenTable through the restaurant's site, or ask for bar seats if you're walking in. Everything is served family-style, so order one pizza and one or two small plates to share and add a steak only if you're hungry. Before 5pm the Happy Days menu drops every pizza to $25. Yaletown-Roundhouse station is a two-minute walk.
