Big-Sky Sunset on Richmond's West Dyke

Six flat kilometres of Richmond dyke where the sun actually falls into the sea, not behind a mountain.

Most Vancouver sunsets are technically a mountain event. The West Dyke is the correction. This flat, easy 6 km trail runs along the top of Richmond's dyke beside the Sturgeon Bank marshlands, with nothing between you and the Strait of Georgia but reeds and a staggering number of migrating birds, and the horizon just goes. The sun does not disappear behind something. It actually falls into the water, which turns out to be a different and considerably more satisfying experience. Walk it from Terra Nova in the north or Garry Point in the south, hold hands, and let the sky go peach at whatever pace you please. It is wide, quiet and the kind of nothing-fancy evening that ends up being the one you actually remember. Bring a windbreaker. The estuary does not do still air, and that is the only warning you will need.
