More info

The date

Rainbow Park is the beach park on the west side of Alta Lake, named for the historic Rainbow Lodge built by Whistler pioneer Myrtle Philip. It has swim docks, beach volleyball courts, picnic tables and barbecue stands, and in summer it's one of Whistler's busiest parks. The view across the lake to Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is the draw.

How to do it

Drive around to Alta Lake Road on the west side of the lake. From May 15 to September 15 there's limited pay parking from 10 am to 6 pm at $2.50 an hour, so arrive early on hot days, or cycle in on the Valley Trail. Bring your own barbecue for the stands, or pack a picnic from the village. In summer the swim docks and volleyball courts are busy in the afternoon, and the beach quiets down toward evening, when the light moves up Whistler and Blackcomb across the lake. Short on time? Thirty minutes on the dock.
