An 11-km car-free paved road through old second-growth forest, gentle enough to walk side by side and actually finish a sentence.
Not every date hike needs to be a knee-destroying epic, and the Seymour Valley Trailway makes a convincing case for the gentle option. It's a wide, paved, car-free road that runs 11 km through the hushed second-growth forest of the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, from Rice Lake all the way to the Seymour Dam, flat enough that you can walk side by side and have a conversation without anyone panting. You can rent bikes and make a breezy half-day of it instead. The first stretch is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, so no one gets left behind. Turn around whenever you like, because an out-and-back means the date is exactly as long as you want it to be. Free, easy to reach, and a low-key crowd-pleaser when you want movement without the suffering. That's almost a philosophy.
