Eleven kilometres of flat trail trace the river past a 7-acre community garden, where people hold genuinely fierce opinions about their tomatoes. Over 200 bird species pass through, so staring into a reed bed counts as culture. It is free, flat, and quietly good at making conversations go honest.
Park at the lot off Colony Farm Road just past the Lougheed - it is the obvious entrance and puts the community gardens right at your feet. Start there: the 7-acre garden tended by 280-odd members is criminally underrated, a wander-able patchwork of vegetables and flowers that gives you instant things to point at and talk about. From there pick the Home Farm or Wilson Farm Dyke trail and head out into the open fields along the Coquitlam River - flat, gravel, and quiet, with the Traboulay PoCo Trail threading through. Don't miss the wooden boardwalk and the old barn foundations out in the fields; they're the photogenic, slightly haunting bit nobody expects in the middle of Metro Van. Pack binoculars if you have them - this is one of the Tri-Cities' top birding spots, and spotting a heron together is a guaranteed small win.
