200 bird species, a 7-acre community garden and the kind of big-sky openness that has a strange way of making people tell the truth.
Colony Farm, also known as lhetexem Regional Park, has the uncanny quality of feeling like actual countryside while sitting right up against Coquitlam's suburbs. The 11 km of flat trails trace the Coquitlam River through hedgerows, wetlands and sprawling open fields that feel nothing like the highway you just left to get here. The birding is serious: over 200 species use the area, which means you can spend a meaningful portion of the walk staring into a reed bed and calling it culture. The 7-acre community garden adds something unexpectedly tender to the route, all organized plots and people with deeply held opinions about their tomatoes. It is free, it is flat, and the big-sky openness has a strange way of making conversations go honest. Bring a question you have been meaning to ask.
