Conquer the Grouse Grind

The date that earns its smugness: 2,830 steps up, Skyride gondola down, beers and jelly legs at the top.

Locals call it Mother Nature's StairMaster, and that's the gentle version. The Grouse Grind is 2.5 sweaty kilometres straight up the face of Grouse Mountain, gaining 800 metres over roughly 2,830 steps, and it is technically a date if your love language is shared suffering and mild regret around step 1,400. The genius move is the exit: the trail only goes up, so you ride the Skyride gondola back down together, legs completely jellied, smug beyond all proportion, with the whole city sprawled out below you. Go early on a dry day before the lineup at the base stacks up, bring more water than seems reasonable, and settle the bet now: whoever taps out first buys the post-climb beers at the chalet. Opens late April, runs roughly 7 a.m. to dusk. You only pay for the Skyride ride down.
