Walk the Sandspit at Blackie Spit

Where the Nicomekl River meets Boundary Bay and the birds arrive in the thousands, free and open from dawn to dusk.

Blackie Spit is a narrow sand finger poking into Boundary Bay where the Nicomekl River runs out to meet it, and walking to the tip feels authentically like leaving the city behind even though you have definitely not. This is officially one of the best birdwatching spots in the country: herons, eagles and thousands of migratory birds use the spit as a stopover, a fact that rewards borrowing binoculars and turning the walk into a low-key treasure hunt. The loop is flat and breezy enough that you can actually talk the whole way through, and the views across the bay to the mountains are the kind that make both of you reach for your phones in the good way. The cafes of Crescent Beach village are a short stroll from the spit when you're ready for warmth.
