Glacier-fed, mountain-walled and so clear you can watch the bottom vanish under your paddle as you drift out from South Beach in a rented canoe. No playlist decisions, no dinner silences, just paddles, the odd argumentative loon, and a mountain wall showing off. Don't bring your phone unless you want to learn whether it floats.
Reserve your free day-use pass online two days ahead (Fri, Mon, 7am release, set an alarm, they vanish), then drive to the South Beach / Alouette day-use lot. Grab a canoe or double kayak from the on-shore rental hut (cash and card, summer daily, weather permitting) and paddle along the right-hand shore toward the quieter coves where the crowds thin out and the water goes turquoise over the gravel shallows. Don't miss the little hidden pebble beach about 15 minutes' paddle south, it's the spot couples picnic on and almost no one else finds. Back on shore, the far-left end of the beach has the best shade and flattest logs for sitting; pack a thermos because there's no concession worth lining up for. Timing trick: skies cloud over Golden Ears fast in shoulder season, so go on a clear forecast and bring a layer for the breeze that always kicks up once the day warms up.
