Adventure & Outdoors
Four kilometres of gentle climbing buys you a wooden platform over Howe Sound with Bowen Island below and the city behind you.
Bowen Lookout is the cheat code of alpine dates, and there is no shame in using it. You start from the Cypress Bowl day lot, wander past marshy Yew Lake, drift through a subalpine meadow, and then tip uphill a gentle 150 metres before a wooden platform appears, perched directly over Howe Sound with Bowen and Gambier Islands spread below and the city glittering somewhere to the south. The whole thing is 4 km round trip. Four. Pack a thermos and something to snack on, claim a spot on the railing, and let the islands do all the work. It's free, the parking is free, and it is one of the very few genuine mountain-view experiences in the region you can do in running shoes. Do note: in winter, Cypress becomes a ski hill, so bring snowshoes or reroute the afternoon entirely.
