More infoMoncton Street has been feeding Steveston since the canneries did, and the Cannery Cafe has been part of that since 1988. Plenty of visitors know the building better as Granny's Diner, the Storybrooke hangout from Once Upon a Time, and the room leans into that without turning itself into a gift shop. The cooking is comfort food with a fishing-village accent: eggs benny, omelettes, chowder, chicken and waffles. Doors open at 9, which in Steveston means you can eat before the village fills up and still be out on the boardwalk by ten.
It is closed Tuesdays; every other day the doors open at 9am. Ask for a window seat on the Moncton Street side, order the eggs benny or the chicken and waffles, and if the chowder is on, start with a cup of it. Reckon on an hour and a quarter. You are then one block from Fisherman's Wharf, where the boats still sell off the deck, and about five minutes on foot from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery if you want the history the room is named after.
