More infoBlacksmith stands where Reid's blacksmith shop stood in 1910, and the trade is a fair one: an open kitchen instead of a forge, and everything baked on site the same day. The croissants are oversized and properly laminated, the viennoiserie and tarts come from pastry cooks who clearly enjoy themselves, and there are eggs, quiche, savouries and gourmet sandwiches for anyone who wants a plate rather than a paper bag. Coffee is Republica, roasted over in Cloverdale. It is licensed, there is outdoor seating, and the doors open at 7, which makes it the earliest good thing in the village.
There are no reservations and a line out the door is normal on a weekend, so arrive early if the pastry case matters to you. Order one croissant and one plate: the laminated pastry is the headline, but the eggs, quiche and gourmet sandwiches are what turn this into an actual sit-down. The coffee is Republica, roasted in Cloverdale, so take it seriously. Half an hour to an hour, then walk it off: Glover Road's antique shops are two minutes away and the Fort Langley National Historic Site and the river are five.
