Izakaya Night at Kingyo

Lantern-lit West End izakaya where the sake list rewards bravery and stone-grilled beef keeps arriving until you've forgotten your plans.

Kingyo is the izakaya that gave West End's Denman Street its most romantic table configuration, which is moody and lantern-warm and designed around the logic that sharing seventeen small things is more fun than ordering one large correct one. The menu sprawls across inventive Japanese-ish territory: stone-grilled beef, ishiyaki rice, sashimi, and a sake list long enough to be an actual adventure if you let it. The structure of the evening does a lot of the date-work for you. You order in waves. Everything arrives to be shared. New dishes keep showing up just as the conversation was running dry. The famous bento requires booking ahead. The low light flatters everything and everyone. Show up curious about the sake, stay for the ishiyaki rice, and leave having eaten approximately twelve more dishes than you budgeted for.
