Meet the Giant Sparrows

Two five-metre house sparrows stand in Olympic Village square, free to visit, and exactly as uncanny as that sounds.

Two enormous house sparrows, five metres tall each, stand in the middle of Olympic Village square, and everyone in Vancouver has simply decided this is fine. They're by artist Myfanwy MacLeod, and the whole piece is a sly nod to Hitchcock, immigration, and the tendency of a small introduced species to quietly take over an ecosystem. It costs nothing to visit, which is the correct price for something that makes you feel this appropriately small. Use the sparrows as your meeting point, grab a coffee from the plaza, then find the False Creek seawall with water and boats on one side and the city on the other. The debate you will have is whether they are cute or menacing. The answer is both. It is always both. Let the seawall pull you toward Science World or back toward Yaletown.
