Sunset Picnic at Ambleside Park

West Vancouver's front lawn on Burrard Inlet: 24 hectares of beach pointing straight at Lions Gate Bridge, free, and inexplicably better at golden hour.

Ambleside is West Vancouver's large, easygoing front lawn on the water: 24 hectares of beach, fields, and seawall arranged to point directly at the Lions Gate Bridge and the Vancouver skyline, which is a lot to look at for free. The trick is going at golden hour, when the bridge lights flicker on and the whole inlet turns copper in a way that makes you feel like you planned this on purpose. Spread a blanket on the sand, walk the pier, or simply watch the freighters drift past Burrard Inlet like they have nowhere pressing to be. It costs nothing and delivers one of the city's better skyline views. Bring something to eat, stay until the light gets good, and accept that this counts as a genuinely excellent evening.
