City Centre, Hoy Creek
More infoHoy Creek Linear Park is the reason Coquitlam City Centre is bearable on foot: a green seam of cedar, fern and running water threaded between the towers, ten minutes from Lafarge Lake Douglas station. Gravel and boardwalk underfoot, kingfishers and dippers overhead, traffic you can hear but never see. Halfway along, just west of the aquatic complex, volunteers from the Hoy-Scott Watershed Society run a small salmon hatchery that raises coho from egg to smolt and releases them into the creek each spring. Free, flat, and open whenever you are.
Pick the trail up from Guildford Way between Johnson and Pinetree, or drop into it from Town Centre Park; either way it is about ten minutes on foot from Lafarge Lake Douglas station. The path is gravel and boardwalk, flat the whole way, and takes roughly forty minutes end to end at a wandering pace. The hatchery sits just west of the City Centre Aquatic Complex: it is volunteer run, so the building is only staffed at posted times, but the rearing pens and the interpretive signs are there whenever you turn up. October is the one to aim for, when the coho come back and the creek does all the entertaining.
