Broke & Bougie
A free Fraser River stroll past the wave-roofed Olympic Oval, with interactive bobsled simulators waiting on the first Thursday.
The Richmond Olympic Oval is the swooping, wave-roofed speed-skating arena from the 2010 Games, and it sits right on the Fraser River with a public waterfront you can wander at no cost whatsoever. Cross the pond on the boardwalk, hit the two pedestrian bridges, find the Indigenous public art, and pick up the Middle Arm dyke trail for a flat, breezy walk with airport float-plane-and-mountain views the whole way. Bring sunglasses. The river light is notably bright out here. Now: if you visit on the first Thursday of the month, 2 to 5pm, you can also slip into the Richmond Olympic Experience for free, where interactive bobsled and ski-jump simulators are waiting to determine, once and for all, who is braver. This turns a pleasant riverside walk into something with a competitive edge and considerably more to talk about on the way home.
