Loop Rice Lake

Loop Rice Lake

A flat, stroller-smooth 3 km lake loop where the most demanding moment is judging the optimists fishing for rainbow trout.

Not every outdoor date needs to be a character test. Rice Lake is the gentle one: a flat, well-groomed 3 km loop around a calm stocked lake in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, wide and smooth enough for strollers and wheelchairs and shaded by trees large enough to have developed opinions about the weather. Walk it slow, take about an hour, watch herons and eagles work the shoreline, and stop on a dock to quietly assess the optimists fishing for rainbow trout. No mountain pass to buy, no strenuous anything. The trailhead is an easy drive up from the city, it's free, and the whole thing has the pleasant energy of an afternoon with nowhere particular to be. Bring a thermos. Do the loop twice if the conversation is still going strong.
