Richmond's best Cantonese dim sum means har gow, siu mai and a 90-minute deadline that focuses the mind wonderfully.
Kirin in Richmond is the kind of dim sum that turns a daytime date into a full event, mostly because the food keeps arriving and the rule is that you don't stop until you've run out of table. Har gow, siu mai, BBQ pork buns, custardy egg tarts and the non-stop negotiation of "okay, one more?" are the whole format, and it's a great format. They're strict on the 90-minute table limit, which sounds like pressure but is actually great structure for people who hate figuring out when to leave. Book ahead (the locals already have), register your license plate at the garage for free parking, and show up properly hungry. This is not a light brunch situation. Arrive planning to eat.
