Richmond's surprise art date: free contemporary shows inside the Cultural Centre, with the Golden Village waiting nearby for soup dumplings.
Richmond rarely tops the romantic-day-out shortlist, which means you get to be the person who discovered it. The Richmond Art Gallery lives inside the Cultural Centre on Minoru Gate, and it runs genuinely thoughtful contemporary shows with a sharp eye for Asian-Canadian and local artists, all at absolutely no cost to you. It's compact, which here is a compliment: you'll actually see it together rather than losing each other in the modern wing. Minoru Park wraps around outside if the afternoon calls for a lakeside loop, and the Golden Village is minutes away for soup dumplings or bubble tea once you've exhausted the cultural portion of the day. Gallery first, then go eat something excellent. Richmond just became a plan.
