The date

Haisan opened October 14 at Commercial and East 13th, a 30 seat room from Steven Che, the chef behind Just Pizza, who cooked in top kitchens in Norway and Australia before coming home. There is one thing on offer: a sixteen course Chinese Pacific Northwest tasting menu, about three hours, $180 a person, with a wine pairing at $75 and a quietly brilliant tea pairing at $30. The food runs BC seafood and Pacific Northwest produce through a Chinese lens, and the room gives the Drive its first true special occasion table. Dinner runs Wednesday to Sunday, first seating 5pm and last at 8:30pm, and tables release on Tock in monthly blocks, so book before you tell anyone.

How to do it

Book on Tock well ahead: the room seats 30, dinner runs Wednesday to Sunday with seatings from 5pm to 8:30pm, and new dates release in monthly blocks. Budget three hours and $180 each before pairings; the wine pairing is $75 and the tea pairing is the sleeper move at $30. Flag allergies when you book, because a sixteen course menu is built in advance. Skip the parking hunt: the 20 bus runs the Drive and Commercial-Broadway station is a 12 minute walk.
