A gravel dike and foreshore trail along the Fraser River by the Mission Bridge, with wide river views and picnic tables.
Matsqui Trail Regional Park, under the Mission Bridge
More infoMatsqui Trail Regional Park runs along the Fraser River on the Abbotsford side, and it's built for wandering. There's 9.16 km of gravel dike trail and 7.7 km of gravel foreshore trail, with the Mission Bridge overhead near the main lot and anglers fishing for sturgeon and salmon along the shore. There are picnic tables for a packed supper. Walk out as far as the conversation lasts, then walk back. Sunset over the river is the obvious move.
Park in the main day-use lot under the Mission Bridge at the end of Riverside Street; the park is open from 6 am to 8 pm. Walk east along the gravel dike for big river views, or drop onto the foreshore trail to get closer to the water and the anglers fishing for sturgeon and salmon. The dike is level, so it's an easy out-and-back of whatever length suits. The old level rail crossing is permanently closed, so follow the signed route under the tracks. There are picnic tables if you bring supper, but fires are not permitted in Abbotsford's parks. Short on time? Walk twenty minutes east and turn around.
