An easy gravel trail over a suspension bridge on the Cheakamus River to graffiti-covered boxcars left from a 1956 derailment.
Cheakamus Crossing, south Whistler
More infoThe Train Wreck trail is one of Whistler's best-known easy walks. A 2.6 km gravel route leads through the forest and across a suspension bridge over the rushing Cheakamus River to a scatter of boxcars from a 1956 derailment, now covered in years of graffiti art and slowly being taken back by the trees. It's free, short and connects to the Sea to Sky Trail. Wear shoes with grip, since the riverbank rocks get slick.
Drive south of the village on Highway 99, turn onto Cheakamus Lake Road, go right at the Legacy Way intersection onto Janes Lake Road, and park in the main area on the right. The gravel route crosses a suspension bridge over the Cheakamus River and reaches the wreck site, where boxcars from the 1956 derailment sit in the forest under layers of graffiti art. Explore the boxcars from the ground; they are old and uneven, so don't climb. The trail stays easy, but the river rocks are slippery and the water is fast and cold, so keep back from the edge. It's open all year but can be icy in winter. Short on time? Bridge and first boxcars, then back.
