In 1984 Elizabeth Lennard spent one week filming Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Yellow Magic Orchestra member and electronic-music pioneer, while he made the album Ongaku Zukan and wandered Bubble-era Tokyo. Tokyo Melody went largely unseen for decades, and The Cinematheque is showing it in a new restoration, in Japanese with English subtitles. At 62 minutes it is a short, late date with a great soundtrack. Have yakitori at Sumu on Burrard before, then walk two minutes from the theatre to Breka on Davie, open around the clock, for pastries and a debrief. Screenings are Thursday at 9pm, Saturday at 6:30pm and Sunday at 9pm. Tickets are $15, 18+, and include the membership the law requires.
Buy tickets on The Cinematheque's film page, $15, 18+. For a 9pm show, eat at Sumu on Burrard around 7:30pm and walk about seven minutes to 1131 Howe Street. The film ends just after 10pm; Breka on Davie, two minutes away, is open 24 hours for coffee and pastries.
