The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra fills the Orpheum on Friday and Saturday with Antony Hermus conducting: Scriabin's Rêverie to open, Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 with soloist Kevin Zhu, then Prokofiev's Cinderella Suite, the ballet score with a midnight clock built into it. About two hours with one intermission. The Orpheum's gilded 1927 hall does most of the work for a date. Have yakitori at Sumu on Burrard first, five minutes away, and end at the Bacchus Piano Lounge in the Wedgewood Hotel on Hornby, also a short walk. Both concerts start at 7:30pm. Seats run from $32 in section five to $135 in the dress circle.
Book on the VSO site, $32 to $135 by section. Eat at Sumu on Burrard at 5:45pm, then walk about five minutes to the Orpheum and be seated by 7:20pm. After the concert, walk six minutes to the Bacchus Piano Lounge at the Wedgewood Hotel on Hornby.
