Maggie Cheung won Best Actress at the 1992 Berlinale for playing Ruan Lingyu, the Shanghai silent-film icon who died at 24, and Stanley Kwan's Centre Stage is back on The Cinematheque's screen in a new restoration that went largely unseen when it was first released in 2021. Kwan breaks his 1930s story with scenes of the actors talking to him out of character, so it plays like a love letter and a film-school seminar at once. It runs 154 minutes, so eat first: Greek platters at Takis Taverna on Davie are five minutes away. Afterwards, walk up to Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar on Seymour and argue over whether the interview scenes made it better. Screenings are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7pm and Sunday at 6pm. Tickets are $15, and buying one makes you a member, which the law requires for 18+ screenings here.
Buy tickets on The Cinematheque's film page for Monday, Wednesday or Friday at 7pm, or Sunday at 6pm; $15 general, 18+. Have dinner first at Takis Taverna on Davie, a five-minute walk, because the film runs 154 minutes. Afterwards, Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar on Seymour is about seven minutes on foot.
