A steep, rugged forest climb from the upper lot on Sumas Mountain to a quiet lake, with lookouts over the Fraser Valley on the way.
Sumas Mountain Regional Park, east Abbotsford
More infoSumas Mountain Regional Park is 1,471 hectares of forest above Abbotsford, and Chadsey Lake is its reward. From the upper parking lot, the Chadsey Lake Trail climbs through the forest to a still lake once called Lost Lake. Expect steep, rough sections. Lookouts on the way frame the Fraser Valley and the river below. It's a proper workout, so bring water, good shoes and someone who likes a climb.
Drive up the Sumas Mountain Forest Service Road to the upper parking lot; the gravel road is shared with trucks and ATVs and can be potholed, so take it slowly. The park is open from 7 am to sunset. The Chadsey Lake Trail starts at the upper lot and climbs to the lake on steep, rough ground in places, so plan on two to two and a half hours with a break at the water. Stop at the lookouts for the valley views. There are no services on the mountain, so pack water and snacks. Short on time? Walk to the first lookout and turn around.
