Deep Cove: Quarry Rock & Doughnuts

A 3.8-km granite-bluff hike, followed by the doughnuts Kate Winslet name-dropped at a film festival.

Deep Cove is half an hour from downtown Vancouver and somehow manages to feel genuinely remote, which is a magic trick the neighbourhood has been pulling off for years. The plan is simple and correct: hike the 3.8-km round trip through forest to Quarry Rock, a granite bluff with a proper view straight down Indian Arm, then feel appropriately pleased with yourself. Next, join the line at Honey Doughnuts, whose freshly-made rings are so good Kate Winslet name-dropped them at a film festival, which is either proof of quality or proof that film festivals need better snacks. The sheltered bay is beginner-friendly for kayaking, with the kayak centre right on the water. Start early: parking is famously tight and the secret, frankly, has been out for years.
