Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island

Buy a $2 bag of seed, and within minutes black-capped chickadees are landing directly on your hand. Yes, really.

Out past Ladner, over a rickety one-lane bridge onto Westham Island, the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is the date that sounds like you couldn't think of anything else and turns out to be the best one you've planned. Buy a $2 bag of seed at the gate. Within minutes, black-capped chickadees are landing on your outstretched palm, which is a genuinely disarming thing to watch happen and a genuinely useful icebreaker. From there it's flat, easy trails through 300 hectares of marsh and ponds, a lookout tower with views clear to Vancouver Island, and in fall through spring the spectacle of tens of thousands of snow geese arriving all at once. Entry is $8. It is inexplicably charming. Book the timed entry ahead and check it's not a Monday.
