The Sunshine Coast is Vancouver's cheat code: it feels like you flew somewhere remote, but it's a 40-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay and you don't need a car. Roberts Creek is the heart of it, a bohemian community with a driftwood beach and a famous hand-painted mandala on the pier. A short hop away is Gibsons, the postcard harbour where The Beachcombers was filmed, all bobbing boats and patio fish-and-chips.

Quick one: did you make it out for this one?

Plan your getaway

Sunshine Coast (Roberts Creek & Gibsons), BC · from Vancouver

door to door

~40-min ferry from Horseshoe Bay + short drives

from Vancouver

50 km

how long

Weekend

best window

May to September (cozy and quiet in fall too)

Getting there

BC Ferries Horseshoe Bay → Langdale (40 min). Pay outbound only; the Langdale→Horseshoe Bay return is free. In summer/long weekends reserve the car deck at bcferries.com a few days ahead or arrive 60+ min early. Gibsons is ~10 min from Langdale; Roberts Creek ~15 min more on Hwy 101.

Driving your own car is easiest; if renting, grab it in Vancouver before the ferry, rentals on the Coast are scarce.

No car? There's a route for that

Walk on the ferry (cheaper) and use BC Transit Sunshine Coast routes between Langdale, Gibsons and Roberts Creek, or rent e-bikes in Gibsons, fully doable car-free. Genuinely doable.

books out

Summer ferry sailings and the nicer stays (Bonniebrook, Rockwater) book out on weekends, reserve the ferry + room ~2 weeks ahead.

Don't miss

  1. 1Walk the Roberts Creek pier and find the hand-painted mandala
  2. 2Fish-and-chips on a Gibsons Landing harbour patio + spot Molly's Reach
  3. 3Mossy rainforest loops at Cliff Gilker Park
  4. 4Pint at Persephone Brewing's farm
  5. 5Sunset on Roberts Creek beach
  6. 6With a night: Smugglers Cove Marine Park + Soames Hill viewpoint

Where to eat

Lunitas Mexican Eateryrestaurantdinner 4.4

A Mexican cantina parked right on Gibsons Harbour, where the tacos have been voted the town's best four years running and the cocktails five. Order a margarita, watch the boats, pretend you live here.

The Gumboot Restaurantrestaurantlunch 4.4

Roberts Creek's number one table, making nearly everything in house and stocking hard to find wines in a village with one stop sign. Casual by day, full bar by evening, ambitions the size of a city. Kitchen closes at 7 pm daily, so plan a lunch or early dinner

The Gumboot Cafecafesnack 4.6

The beating hippie heart of Roberts Creek, stationed at the village's famous three way stop. Breakfast burritos, proper coffee, and a garden patio where time moves at roughly half its usual speed.

Smitty's Oyster Houserestaurantdinner 4.1

An oyster bar in a former marine repair shop, with what locals insist is the best patio on the Coast. The oysters arrive absurdly fresh, the harbour glitters, and nobody hurries you anywhere. Very popular in summer; expect a wait for the patio

Persephone Brewing Companyfood trucklunch 4.7

A brewery on an actual working hop farm, where wood fired pizza comes out of an outdoor oven and the taproom feels like a friend's living room, right down to the record player. Farm to glass, literally. The pizza oven and food truck keep limited hours; check before you go

Tapworks Brewing Companypub foodlunch or dinner 4.5

Gibsons' neighbourhood brewery since 2017, with an upstairs deck, flatbreads, and a burger that regulars defend with genuine conviction. Come thirsty, leave mildly evangelical about small town beer.
