Hope & the Othello Tunnels: A Dramatic Canyon Getaway

Granite railway tunnels over a turquoise gorge, 80-plus chainsaw carvings, and a 90-minute drive most people waste by not stopping.

Hope sits at the meeting point of three mountain ranges and gets treated like a motorway services. Everyone's halfway to somewhere else and not actually stopping, which is a tremendous collective error, because tucked in that little town is the Othello Tunnels: a series of granite railway tunnels blasted through the Coquihalla Canyon cliffs a century ago, where a flat easy trail walks you through pitch-dark passages that open onto a turquoise river thundering through a slot gorge. It is genuinely jaw-dropping. It is 90 minutes away. Almost nobody knows this. Add Hope's 80-plus chainsaw carvings scattered around town, the misty cascade of Bridal Veil Falls a short detour away, and a slow small-town pace, and you have a low-key adventurous day that ends with you feeling smug about the road not taken.

No car? There's a route for that

An intercity bus (Ebus/FlixBus) reaches downtown Hope, but the Othello Tunnels and Bridal Veil Falls are several km out with no transit, a car is effectively required to do the trip properly.

Where to eat

Owl Street Caferestaurantlunch 4.5

The closest proper kitchen to the tunnels, a country cafe on Owl Street serving a lamb shank that has no business being this tender this far up a back road. Order it, then thank the owls. Closed Sundays

~$15-25/person
Mountainview Brewing Co.pub fooddinner 4.8

Hope's own brewery, where the smash burger earns the sort of praise normally reserved for religious experiences and the patio stares straight at the mountains. There is a foosball table, should the conversation ever need rescuing.

~$15-25/person
Blue Moose Coffee Housecafesnack 4.5

The unofficial living room of Hope at 322 Wallace Street, dealing in proper coffee, fresh muffins and panini, with local craft beer on tap for the undecided. Every BC road trip has a Blue Moose chapter. Start yours.

~$8-15/person
Home Restaurantrestaurantlunch or dinner 4.4

Feeding highway travellers since 1953, and the pie case is the whole point: bumbleberry, coconut cream, lemon meringue, crusts light enough to achieve liftoff. Agree to split a slice, then quietly regret agreeing. Perennially busy; expect a lineup at peak times

~$15-25/person
Kibo Japanese Grill & Caferestaurantdinner 4.4

A family has run this room on King Street for 25 years, which is how a small mountain town ends up with crisp shrimp tempura and sushi locals swear is the best around. The locals are right.

~$15-30/person
