In winter, the Pacific hurls 20-foot swells against Chesterman Beach while you watch from a fireplace with a glass of something, the original storm-watching romance and still the best version. In summer, the sand mellows enough to learn to surf. The move is basing part of the trip in Ucluelet, where the Wild Pacific Trail hugs clifftops out to a lighthouse.
From Victoria it's Hwy 1 up the east coast to Parksville, then west on Hwy 4 (the Pacific Rim Highway) through Port Alberni, the natural gas-and-coffee halfway stop, and over the mountains past Kennedy Lake. Check DriveBC before you leave, since Hwy 4 has rolling maintenance closures near Kennedy Hill. Hit the Ucluelet junction first and don't skip the town most people blow past: walk the Wild Pacific Trail out to Amphitrite Lighthouse, the quieter, cliffier cousin of everything to the north. Then drive the last 40 km into Tofino. In winter, base yourself somewhere oceanfront and storm-watch, Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay get the biggest swells November to March, best from behind glass with a fire going. In summer, book a beginner surf lesson at Cox Bay (gentle whitewash, gear included), then sprawl on Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park (note the Canada Strong Pass means free park admission June 19, Sept 7, 2026). Don't miss tacos at the original Tacofino truck, dinner at Wolf in the Fog, beach-combing the Chesterman sandspit out to Frank Island at low tide, and, if you've got a full day, a boat or seaplane trip to the Hot Springs Cove pools. Best photo spots: Cox Bay storm spray, the Amphitrite Lighthouse boardwalk, and the long empty curve of Long Beach at golden hour. Couples: a winter storm room with a soaker tub and a tasting menu is the move. Solo: the hostel on the water plus a surf lesson is a perfect reset. Short on time? A single full day works as Ucluelet's Wild Pacific Trail + Long Beach + a Tofino dinner, but this one really wants a night (or two).

Hwy 1 north to Parksville, then west on Hwy 4 (Pacific Rim Highway) through Port Alberni, the halfway gas/food stop, over the mountains past Kennedy Lake to the Ucluelet junction, then ~40 km north to Tofino. The Kennedy Hill safety project is done and the road is two-way, but active maintenance continues with occasional single-lane delays and short full closures, always check DriveBC.ca before departing. Allow extra time in winter weather.
