Whalers on the Point occupies some of the best real estate in Tofino, the downtown waterfront with a straight view across Clayoquot Sound to Meares Island and Lone Cone, and charges hostel prices for it. Guests have reported watching whales from the common-room seating, which is not an amenity the booking engines have a checkbox for.

There are dorms for the sociable and private rooms and suites for everyone else, some sleeping five, some with balconies over the cove. Downstairs you get a well-equipped shared kitchen, a pool table, a reading room, and a surf room where dripping wetsuits go to think about what they have done. The grocery store is two blocks away; so, more or less, is everything else in town.

The economics are the punchline: winter Stay and Play packages start around 99 dollars a night, in a town where that sum otherwise buys parking and a bowl of chowder. Just mind the fine print. Check-in opens at 5 pm, checkout is 10 am, and the kitchen closes at 9:30, so schedule your midnight snack for 9:15.

The setting

At 81 West Street on the downtown Tofino waterfront, facing Meares Island and Lone Cone across Clayoquot Sound, with groceries, restaurants, and the whale-watching docks all within a few blocks.

Getting there

Drive from Victoria, no ferry involved: Highway 1 to Nanaimo, Highway 19 to Parksville, Highway 4 west via Port Alberni, about five hours. Once parked at 81 West Street the car can rest; downtown Tofino is fully walkable and the in-house adventure centre rents bikes, surfboards, and paddleboards. The Victoria bus link is currently suspended.

good to know

Front desk keeps limited hours (10 to noon and 5 to 9 pm); check-in from 5 pm, checkout 10 am, kitchen closed overnight from 9:30 pm. The winter Stay and Play deal (mid-October through April 30) takes 10 percent off private rooms on two-night minimum stays.
