If Salt Spring is the Gulf Island that posts about itself, Pender is the one that turns its phone off and means it. North and South Pender are stitched by a wooden bridge, with 61 km of coastline hiding coves. Check into a restored Airstream at WOODS on Pender, soak in the hot tub whenever you please, and taste at Sea Star Vineyards and Twin Island Cider the same afternoon.

Getting there

BC Ferries Swartz Bay (Victoria) - Otter Bay (North Pender): direct sailings ~40 min, multi-stop sailings up to ~2 hrs, up to 8 round trips/day. From Vancouver, take Tsawwassen - Southern Gulf Islands or a thru-fare via Swartz Bay. Southern Gulf Island sailings are fully bookable - reserve the car deck at bcferries.com when you book your cabin.

Bring or rent a car (grab it in Victoria before the ferry) - Pender's beaches, vineyards and bays are spread out with no town transit, so wheels make it. Cabins-with-bikes work for a quieter, tighter stay.

No car? There's a route for that

Walk-on is cheaper but the island has no public transit; use a bike for short hops near Otter Bay or rely on your stay's amenities. A car is the practical pick for covering both Penders.

books out

Southern Gulf Island ferries and the best cabins (WOODS Airstreams, Poets Cove cottages) book out on summer weekends - reserve the ferry and stay ~2-3 weeks ahead.

Don't miss

  1. 1Kayak a calm bay and find hidden road-end beaches
  2. 2Taste at Sea Star Vineyards and Twin Island Cider
  3. 3Cross the little wooden bridge between North and South Pender
  4. 4Soak in a hot tub under the stars
  5. 5Sunset from Mortimer Spit or Port Browning
  6. 6Climb Mount Norman for the Salish Sea view

Where to eat

HUB at Hope Bayrestaurantdinner 4.6

An Italian restaurant built on a dock at Hope Bay, so the ocean sits directly beneath your handmade gnocchi. Vegetarian, candid about it, and better for it. Live music some evenings. You will forgive the ferry schedule. Small oceanfront room; live music evenings fill up

~$25-40/person
Coffee + Kitchen at WOODS on Penderrestaurantlunch or dinner 4.7

Farm to table at a glamping resort, with an on-site greenhouse supplying the kitchen the honest way. Guests keep calling the coffee the best in the Gulf Islands, which around here counts as fighting talk.

~$20-35/person
Port Browning Pub (Port Browning Marina Resort)pub foodlunch 4.2

A marina pub with arguably the best water view on the island and a deck engineered for watching sailboats attempt to park. Order the seafood chowder, claim a railing seat, and quietly write off the afternoon. Service slows when the summer boating crowd lands

~$20-35/person
Vanilla Leaf Bakery Cafebakerysnack 4.7

Pender's only proper bakery, tucked into the Driftwood Centre and responsible for cinnamon buns people describe in wedding-speech terms. One reviewer met the best peanut butter and jelly doughnut of their life here. Go early. Daily-changing selection sells out; morning visits are safest

~$8-15/person
Slow Coast Coffeecafelunch 4.6

A family-run cafe on Schooner Way where crepes and, improbably, dosas share the menu, and local jam sessions break out unannounced. Order a savoury crepe and act like you always knew about the dosas.

~$10-18/person
