Salt Spring is the Gulf Island everyone secretly wants to run away to, and Swartz Bay gets you there in 35 minutes flat. It's a hand-built, faintly bohemian world of potters, cheesemakers and lavender fields anchored by Ganges harbour. Saturday is the main event: roughly 140 vendors of produce, art and warm baking spill around Centennial Park with live music drifting through. Book it again before the ferry home.

Getting there

BC Ferries Swartz Bay (Victoria) - Fulford Harbour is the most frequent route (~35 min, up to 8+ sailings/day). From Vancouver, take Tsawwassen - Long Harbour (~90 min, fewer sailings) or a thru-fare via Swartz Bay. Southern Gulf Island sailings are fully bookable - reserve the car deck at bcferries.com as soon as you book your room; summer weekends fill fast. Ganges is ~15 min from Fulford.

Your own car is easiest for the artisan farms; if renting, grab it in Victoria before the ferry - island rentals are very limited. Otherwise the seasonal Hop On Hop Off covers the studio trail car-free.

No car? There's a route for that

Walk on the ferry (cheaper) and use the Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off (Fri-Sun, late April-late Sept) or BC Transit route 1 between Fulford, Ganges and Vesuvius; e-bike rentals in Ganges round it out. Genuinely doable.

books out

Southern Gulf Island ferries and the best rooms (Hastings House especially) book out on summer weekends - reserve the ferry and stay ~2-3 weeks ahead; Hastings House takes a 50% deposit and closes in winter.

Don't miss

  1. 1Graze the Saturday Market at Centennial Park, Ganges (April-October)
  2. 2Taste at Salt Spring Island Cheese and a lavender farm in bloom
  3. 3Cider flight at Salt Spring Wild Cider or pints at Salt Spring Island Ales
  4. 4Sunset over Swanson Channel from Ruckle Provincial Park
  5. 5Drive (or hike) up Mount Maxwell for the island's biggest view
  6. 6Browse the artisan studio trail by car or Hop On Hop Off

Barb's Bakery & Bistrobakerysnack 4.4
