Just over the Malahat from Victoria, it lines up walkable vineyards and farm-to-table restaurants in restored 1900s farmhouses. Down at Cowichan Bay, float homes make a proper food crawl: stone-milled heritage-grain bread at True Grain, a wedge from Hilary's Cheese, ice cream on the dock. Under an hour away, it feels like another country.
From Victoria it's a quick, scenic run, Hwy 1 over the Malahat pass, about 50 minutes to Cowichan Bay and ~52 to Duncan. Start in the seaside village of Cowichan Bay: walk the wharf, grab stone-milled heritage-grain bread at True Grain, a wedge from Hilary's Cheese, and ice cream from Udder Guys, then poke through the Maritime Centre and the float homes. Spend the afternoon on a small winery loop, Averill Creek for a year-round terrace and valley views, Blue Grouse or Enrico nearby, and Unsworth Vineyards in Mill Bay for its farm-to-table restaurant in a restored farmhouse (its dining room is reopening summer 2026 after a renovation, so confirm before you count on dinner there). For a non-wine swap, Merridale Cidery in Cobble Hill does orchard cider flights. Don't miss the Kinsol Trestle near Shawnigan Lake, one of the tallest free-standing timber rail trestles in the world, a flat, photogenic walk on the Cowichan Valley Trail. In summer, cool off with a swim or a tube float on the Cowichan River. Best photo spots: the Cowichan Bay float homes, a vineyard terrace at golden hour, and the Kinsol Trestle from below. Couples: a tasting menu plus a Cowichan Bay waterfront room is the romantic version. Solo: the bread-and-cheese crawl plus a river walk and one good winery is a perfect quiet day. Short on time? Cowichan Bay village + the Kinsol Trestle + one winery is a full day trip without staying over.

Hwy 1 (Trans-Canada) north over the Malahat, a scenic 25 km mountain section about 27 km out of Victoria. Cowichan Bay is a few minutes off the highway (~50 min total); Duncan is ~52 min. The Malahat is the main year-round island route and is fully open; expect curves and some traffic near Langford and Duncan.
