The Quality Inn is the sensible-shoes choice in Hope, a mid-range Choice Hotels inn where the appeal is location rather than romance. Hope itself is a two-hour, 165-kilometre run east of Vancouver on Highway 1, the last proper town before the mountains swallow the road, which makes it the logical base camp for the canyon and its tunnels.

What you are really booking is the town on the doorstep. Hope calls itself the Chainsaw Carving Capital of Canada and has the receipts: more than eighty wood carvings of eagles, bears and cougars scattered through the centre and Memorial Park, plus a life-size wooden Sylvester Stallone standing guard on Wallace Street, because First Blood was filmed here back in 1982.

The Othello Tunnels sit about fifteen minutes east, so you can eat breakfast in town and be walking through a hundred-year-old railway tunnel before the coffee wears off. Rooms are chain-standard and priced to match, hovering around a hundred and twenty to a hundred and thirty dollars, which in Hope buys you a bed and precisely no surprises.

The setting

In the town of Hope, near the junction of Highways 1, 3, and 5 where the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers meet. Walking distance to downtown shops, Memorial Park, and the chainsaw carvings; about 15 minutes by car from the Othello Tunnels.

Getting there

From Vancouver it is about two hours and 165 km east on Highway 1 to Hope, with no ferries involved. Once in town, the Othello Tunnels are a 15-minute drive via Kawkawa Lake Road and Othello Road. A car makes the whole trip work; transit to the trailhead is effectively non-existent.

good to know

Coquihalla Canyon Park and the Othello Tunnels are seasonal, open roughly April 1 to October 31 and closed in winter for falling ice, so plan the tunnels for late spring through fall. Hope's room rates are lowest in the shoulder months of April, October, and November.
