Me Time
Three hours east of Vancouver, the light pollution finally surrenders and the Milky Way becomes almost too loud.
E.C. Manning Provincial Park is where the Lower Mainland's light pollution finally admits defeat. Three hours east on Highway 3, the Cascades close in and the horizon goes dark in a way that a city dweller will find alarming and then deeply peaceful. There are no towns, no orange glow on the horizon, and one cozy resort that rents telescopes, which makes this one of the best stargazing spots in southern BC. Drive up to the Cascade Lookout, paddle a canoe across Lightning Lake, and in late September make the hike toward Frosty Mountain for the alpine larches turning gold. These are the closest larches to Vancouver. Make that mean something. Then lie on your back under a sky thick enough with stars that you'll feel obligated to say something romantic, ready or not.
