Tear Into a Metre-Long Dosa at Krishna's in Newton

Newton's best-loved South Indian anchor: a metre-long crispy dosa eaten by hand, and filter coffee poured from a height with ceremony.

The stretch of 120th Street in Newton may be one of the finest South Indian eating corridors in Canada, and Krishna's Dosa Grill has been the no-nonsense anchor of it for over a decade. This is a date for people who'd rather tear into a giant crispy crepe together than fuss over a tasting menu. Order one paper dosa, watch it arrive hanging off both ends of the plate like a savoury sail, and eat it with your hands. It's vegetarian, cheap, and loud in exactly the right way. The real closer is the filter coffee at the end: thick, sweet, poured from a height with great ceremony over a tiny cup. Come hungry and with a low threshold for elegance. The elegance is not the point. The dosa is.
