Rainy Day
A tiny downtown shop dealing in used, rare, and slightly bizarre books, with a hand-carved sign and staff who actually read.
The Paper Hound is not interested in being big. This pocket-sized downtown shop deals in used and rare books: a famously deep poetry wall, philosophy, and the sort of obscure, slightly-bizarre titles that a staffer will slide across the counter with an expression of total confidence. The hand-carved wooden sign out front is doing a lot of communicative work about the personality inside. Walk in, set a five-dollar challenge, and take turns reading the first paragraph of every candidate aloud until you've each convinced the other to commit to something. Browse until the rain eases, walk out with books neither of you will find anywhere else, and spend the evening reading in the same room. That's a genuinely good evening.
